It's pretty impossible to make a comparison as they were different times.
I think players have got better and if the 85/6 team played today's they would get hammered. This goes for any period. The 85/6 team would beat a Moore / Hurst / Peters team.

Today's players are fitter and stronger for good reasons - better training and nutrition, and probably more importantly, a fitness culture throughout the game. No reason why the boys of 86 wouldn't have fitted in with that and been fitter and stronger themselves.
Well, except for Frankie Mac, maybe

I think Sakho has got far more to his game that Cottee,
He would have scored a few more IMO.

Fitter maybe... faster maybe.... but in my eyes cause you can run fast or run a lot does not make a decent footballer... silly old sentimental me....
Stronger.... naaah.... not for me... then again doing 200 bench presses a day never made a decent footballer either...
2 players in question... very similar... Andy Carroll & Dave Cross... both similar in the jobs they did... apart from one scored goals ... and the other was in the team to cause a bit of disruption in the penalty box.... I could have compared Hursty with Carroll but that would have been very unfair...

How many goals did Cottee and McAvennie get that season, 50 plus? Does anybody seriously think Sakho , Valencia and Carroll will get near that?

It's an interesting debate but very difficult to compare.
What was remarkable about that season was how few injuries and suspensions there were. Clearly there were some great players in that team at the top of their game but being able to put the same team out every week made a massive difference as well.

Considering most of them were not even born, none of them, Nolan would have been about 4 but how many 4 year olds have played professional football?, Sam may have been a shout although I highly doubt it, he would have been at the end of his playing days though.

The team in 85/86 were 1 game and atrocious weather away from winning the league title. They were a class TEAM.
The game might have changed a bit over the years but Pele is better than Rooney, Moore is better than Terry and The 85/86 team is better than the team now.
